My Visit to Texas

Posted by: wendi | added: Oct 7th, 2009 | Back to News

What fun I had last week!  I just returned from visiting Northgate Crossing, Bammel, Jenkins, Meyer and Ponderosa Elementary schools in Spring ISD in Texas.  They say everything is big in Texas, and that would certainly describe the warm welcome and rousing enthusiasm from the kids and teachers I met.  We sang a chess song, analyzed some chess puzzles, and did a chess dance!  Those kids are really smart!!  Thank you to Spring ISD for a wonderful visit.  Now I am off to Chicago to receive an award, I will tell you more about that next week!

Cool

Hey, that's really neat. I just so happen to work for Spring ISD and I'm a big chess player. Funny those two things would merge together. Jenkins was just renovated, so it looks very nice.

When I first started working for the district, and I saw all the chess boards everywhere, I got very excited and wanted to play a game right away.

It would seem First Move affects not only the kids, but the staff as well!

Perhaps Wendy should feature some of the coverage her program is currently receiving on the ABC affiliate here in Houston. Local consumer and investigative reporter Wayne Dolcefino is visiting a different district here each day this week, as part of a series of looks at this and other district "innovations". He had a series of interesting interviews with administrators and teachers about the successes obtained by the program to date. Obtaining sections of that video would be a good way to highlight the salient portions of the First Move program and what it has to offer to both students and teachers - especially teachers...
